Personal Statement: My Journey into Wellness and Hormone Replacement Therapy
In my years of specializing in urogynecology, I’ve had the privilege of helping countless women regain control of their lives by treating conditions like incontinence and prolapse. While the satisfaction of resolving these specific health challenges was immense, I often heard patients express a wish—that the other issues they were grappling with could also be ‘fixed.’ Upon deeper discussion, it became apparent that many were experiencing symptoms related to perimenopause and menopause, initially manifesting as vaginal dryness but extending to a range of other issues as well.
This led me to broaden my medical lens to include Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) as a key part of my practice. Just as we routinely replace insulin in diabetics or thyroxine in those with thyroid imbalances, I was struck by the compelling data in published literature suggesting that the absence of hormones can promote disease. While it perplexed me that some in the medical community chose to leave these hormonal imbalances untreated, thereby indirectly promoting other health-related issues, I knew that I wanted to do more for my patients.
I introduced Hormone Replacement Therapy for both women facing menopausal symptoms and men experiencing symptoms of andropause. The transformations were not just heartening; they were life-changing. I witnessed firsthand how replacing essential hormones could not only alleviate discomfort but also mitigate risks associated with chronic diseases. The positive feedback from patients who not only felt better physically but also experienced a marked improvement in their quality of life was immensely gratifying.
To further amplify these successes, I extended the scope of my practice to include a dedicated Wellness Center, emphasizing education and holistic approaches to health. The center focuses on providing insights into well-being, including considerations for a balanced lifestyle.
Today, my practice is not just about treating symptoms or specific health conditions; it’s about empowering men and women to take control of their health at every stage of life. The joy and fulfillment I’ve derived from this extension of my work, helping people become the best versions of themselves, have been some of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
